Really Seeing Europe - Getting the Most from Your European Tour
When many people plan their European vacation, they only include major cities. I think that's a big mistake. If you really want to get a true sense of what Europe is like, you can't follow this approach. Though seeing big cities is fascinating, you're missing out on seeing the 'true' Europe, the lifestyle that most Europeans live, their ancestors live and the history.
Paris, A Great Example
Too many people think that you can interchange Paris and France in the same sentence. Having lived, worked and studied in France, I think I have a right to make this comment. If the only place you've ever visited in France is Paris, then you definitely have not seen France. France is made up of many regions that, in many ways, each have their own culture, history and way of living. What you'll also likely notice is that there are certain elements of daily life that you'll find around the country, but that are not present in Paris. You'll see a passion for food and wine at local markets, restaurants and shops. Sarlat is a great example of this - A medieval setting perfect for those with a gourmet palate. The pace of life is also different. Everyone in Paris seems to be late and in a rush (with a cigarette in mouth). This is contrasted by a very relaxed and friendly demeanor found in smaller towns and villages.![]()
Mix Big Cities with Small Villages
One of the greatest aspects of travel in Europe is the proximity of one place to another and the great public transportation system that is not impeded by borders. This gives travellers a great opportunity to visit a wide variety of places. Try to mix up your trip so that you're visiting big cities and small ones. If you're not sure where to go, think along the lines of your interests. Visiting a wine region in France or Italy, for example, is an unforgettable experience.
Head East
If you want to escape the swarm of tourists in the summer months and want to try and find that European vibe that existed when your parents visited the continent, head East. The East also has the advantage of being cheaper, so you can extend your stay or sample some luxuries that are out of your price range in the West.

While traveling in the East, you're more likely to meet like travellers searching for great destinations off the beaten path. This is a great opportunity to share stories and find out first hand if there are any hidden gems nearby. Places that you may never have considered, because you thought the area was difficult to get to or dangerous, might end up being your favorite stop. Some of my fondest memories, and the stories I continue to tell me friends, are from the strangest places that I didn't even know existed prior to my trip. Keep this in mind and you'll end up having an unforgettable experience in Europe!
